Lisa Sheldon is a local author behind The Importantalizing Loola-Boop book and Hows Your Good website - she wrote after she faces health crisis and decided to share her life lessons of goodness for her daughters.
We talked about her journey through her health challenges, and life, and kids, and importance of speaking your truth.
Lisa experienced a condition called thyroid storm that in essence was endangering her life and shutting down her organs as her thyroid was hyperactive. At the time - about seven years ago - her daughters were only eight and nine. Faced with the possibility of not being present for her daughters growing up, she wanted to leave behind advice, road map to goodness. She had tried various channels of expression- book, just talking to her girls - but felt overwhelmed. At times just feeling like giving up on this idea of writing things down, but the nudging inside her kept growing. As Lisa put it - I felt like I was in this fun house. I knew what I wanted to say, but I didn't know how to say it. The fun house had all these millions of doors, but where do I walk in. .... - For me it began because I felt - if I'm going to leave the planet I want to say something to my girls .... then it was - what am I going to say to them... ideas started to come in and I started writing them down.
Two quotes inspired her -
“If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself.”
“Any fool can make something complicated. It takes a genius to make it simple.”
She challenged herself to write a book that is simple and concise and one that a six year old can understand. She ran into challenge of looking for illustrator who would be able work with her and conveying her message and decided on doing it herself. Lisa loves scrap-booking and hand lettering and decided that she will take this route write her book. She was writing down her ideas in lettering and then the main charterer grew out of it.
With support and encouragement of her husband she found a printer and decided on self publishing - Lisa is selling books herself.
The main thread of her book is finding your good and acknowledging goodness in ourselves and others.
Thankfully Lisa health has stabilized and she is continues sharing and growing her message of goodness.
