Riga 2018

This one is bit from the heart.

Jana Baznica Riga St Johns Church in Riga Latvia

I spent a few weeks in Riga this July -  I went back to visit family and city where I grew up. This has been a long time since I went for a visit all by myself. just a year ago we went as a family. But this one was different. This was a trip to visit my grandmothers -  both of them still living. It was also a trip to to enjoy the city my way.

Art Noveau Riga Latvia

I am a city girl -  I haven't lived in a big city in over 7 years now, but I miss it. I grew up in Riga, Latvia -  the capital. While my early childhood was spent mostly in Ciekurkalns -  older corner of the city with frequent visits to Mezaparks  - large park and a Zoo near Kisezers Lake, my high-school years  were spent in Imanta - newer apartment area, and frequent trips downtown Riga.

Every time I go back for a visit I fall in love with this beautiful city I used to call home. In everyday life I had walked countless times past stunning buildings and centuries old churches. Now I breath in and take a moment to admire the Art Noveau architecture that flourishes all over town. The cobblestone streets make me think of centuries old tradition that has been preserved.

This trip I also filled with museums and art gallery visits. I went to Latvian National Art Museum and Arsenals ( I haven't been in arsenals since high-school), I went Makslas Telpa and countless souvenir shops and local boutiques that looked like art galleries.

And I enjoyed all the moments of city -  filled with life and culture... and also tourists and traffic. I felt like a tourist admiring architecture and meeting friends in cafe's I no monger were familiar with. I was reminded of life with no air conditioning ( and this was unusually hot summer) and no refills, and delicious food, and unique salads.... and amazing deserts.

While I did quite a bit of wondering in the city, this trip was also to spend some very needed time with family. One of my grandmothers is in her nineties and the hardest part is  feeling so helpless  -  being so far away when her health is deteriorating. My other grandmother is in her late eighties and I got to spend a bit more time with her - remembering most of my childhood summers spent in her country home.

This trip was bittersweet. Its this unexplained feeling  when I have built my life so far away. While technology helps bring as closer with Skype calls and photos, the longing of all things familiar, unique cultural habits and people who know you inside and out never really fades.

There is a part of me that feels like a nomad -  unsettled, looking for new  places and enjoying the travel, but there are also deep roots in the place I come from. And this trip was a reminder of how deep they are.

Goodbye 2017 and hello 2018

2017 was a great year. Looking back I have to be thankful for the great opportunities through Minted -  I have two greeting cards in Target stores.

Latvian Roots - Photo Shoot

It doesn't happen that I get to celebrate my Latvian roots in photos, but my cousin came to visit.

November 18th happens to be Latvian Independence Proclamation Day and Latvia is only a year shy of it 100th birthday.

Latvia is small country on Baltic Sea. While its population is just about 2 million, the country has rich history. Art Noveau architecture in Riga (the capital of Latvia) shines throughout the city. The song and dance festival gathers thousands of Latvians in celebration. And now as the Latvias 100th birthday is approaching, the country is ready to celebrate.

I was born in Latvia and grew up there, but my life has taken me to States where I'm raising my family. And while during busy days my Latvian spirit may fade, I feel my roots deeply when I listen to music or catch up with a fellow Latvian.

Fall Couple Photo Shoot

This fall couple shoot really got to showcase the closeness of Seth and Kasey. We actually got to enjoy a bit of fall color. Michigan had  some interesting weather this season -  from 96F at the end of September to leaves changing really late and quick, and in many place falling leaving bare trees.

But at the Rotary Park we lucked out with fall colors and brisk but dry weather.

2017 Let the great year begin

Clarkston Mi is the little town I call home, and where I grow my photography business.

Clarkston has grown in the past year with new restaurants ( Honcho and Parkers Hiltop Brewery ), and vibrant events  like Food Truck Rally , Taste of Clarkston  and Art in the Village. And I cant wait to see want 2017 will bring.

With my camera in hand, I cant wait to explore the events, create head-shots for business people and have memorable high school senior sessions.

So here is a toast to great 2017, to personal growth, to business growth and to making great connections. CHEERS.

To Have and to Hold

TO HAVE AND TO HOLD FROM THIS DAY FORWARD What a powerful promise. I here this one in almost  every wedding I photograph. The vows - emotional, solemn, sometimes funny words we say in front of those that have come to celebrate with us. The ring exchange that follows is to symbolize the eternity of the word we just said.

I think of those words often -  to have and to hold - when I need an arm wrapped around my shoulders at the end of the day -  sometimes it is after a busy day, just to sink into my husbands arms on a sofa in front of tv, sometimes it is in a cooler winter evening, when a t shirt and a sweater still have me shivering and sometimes for no reason at all.  To HOLD, be held -  it is a wonderful connection.

I feel that we are more likely to hold out children as if by entering our world they came with this vow - held from the very first moments, comforted, made secure, assured of how much they are cherished. So this holiday season, I wish for everyone, to find a moment to hug someone, to hold them, to give a sense of being special and loved.
